Earth Science Resources

The cost of two sets of fluorite and sulfur (minerals), two sets of limestone (sedimentary rock), two sets of gneiss and schist (metamorphous rock), 3 sets of pegmatite (igneous rock) and 3 Chemical and Mechanical Weathering of Rocks Lab Investigation Kits is $429, including shipping and fulfillment.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My earth science students love science. I teach Regents earth science to 115 eighth grade students. The students in my class come to science six times a week, one ninety-minute class and four forty-five minute classes. We explore earth science systems: astronomy, meteorology and, and geology (minerals and rocks). For the students, this is the first in-depth science study they have undertaken in preparation for the Physical Setting / Earth Science Examination given in June. For all my students, I try to lay a foundation of understanding the world and universe around them. All of this is extremely difficult without earth science materials for my 8th grade students. When I want my students to understand the important properties of minerals and rocks, I make copies. When explaining that minerals can be identified by well-defined physical properties, such as cleavage, fracture, color, density, hardness, streak, luster, crystal shape, and reaction with acid, I must figure out how to have my students experience the information in a variety of ways with out the physical presence of minerals such as Galena, Sulfur, Halite, Fluorite and Quartz. With a classroom set of minerals, I can have my students experience classifying minerals based on well-defined physical and chemical properties. With rocks and minerals, the students will have a chance to examine the different samples and record their observations. The goal is to help bring science into my classroom in a way to expand my students' knowledge base in the sciences with the implementation of the resources I am requesting.
