Hello, I am a first grade teacher at C.S. 214 in the Bronx. My students have very little knowledge of their natural environment. They are city kids. They do not know what is under the concrete that they walk on. They have so many questions about the world around them. I try to answer them as best as I can but I would like to have them somehow answer their own questions and see and explore the world in the classroom.
I want to incorporate more science into my curriculum. I grow plants with my students but I do not have any other science kits or materials other than what I provide. I have done webquests with my first grade students and I use the internet when I can but this is all distance learning. Young children need hands on activities. I would like to have a kit or materials for any first grade earth science activities. I would like for them to learn about the workings of the planet and how it relates to them and their daily lives. I would like them to study weather and the atmosphere. I would like for them to study land and water. I would like for them to learn about their environment.
I would appreciate any type of earth science kit or book that has activities that I can do with young children. It will give them terminology and broaden their vocabularies. It will help them understand their world and the world around them in an organic sense. They will see how humans play a role in protecting the earth. The students will have the oppurtunity to experiment and make a project. This will help them with their formal education because they will be doing experiments and projects in later years that will determine which high school they will attend.
