Earth Science Exploration: Convection!

Help me give my students a way to visualize convection, which is the center of many of the dynamic processes within the Earth. This will help them understand movement in Earth's crust, air masses, and ocean currents!

My Students

My students all come from a variety of backgrounds and five different counties near Raleigh, NC. They are a bright group of kids with diverse goals and dreams. I have mostly freshmen, but I also have a group of sophomores, juniors and one senior! Consequently, they are all at different points in their journey towards their high school diploma. They each bring their own unique personalities and learning styles to my classroom. My students are bright, eager to learn, and I enjoy helping them make connections from earth science to every day life. They are the future of this planet, so it is a joy teaching them how to be responsible citizens of the earth. They make every day different, interesting, and fun!

My Project

Many students are visual learners, and convection is one of the concepts that is difficult to grasp, yet consistently comes up throughout Earth Science.

This model will help students to see and understand how convection works, which is a key concept in the Earth's natural dynamic process.

Convection is tied to the movement in the Earth's crust which drives the whole process of plate tectonics in the mantle. It is also related to air masses and fronts, ocean currents, and more! I will use this model throughout several different units to emphasize and help students to internalize this important science concept!
