My students need to experience education outside the NYC's borders. Many of them have never left the city, and this trip allows them to see earth science first hand.
"We Do Not Inherit the Earth from Our Ancestors; We Borrow It from Our Children." This powerful quote means nothing if one doesn't value Earth as a precious resource. In my earth science classroom, I teach my students what Earth offers through pictures and relating it what they see in the city.
I teach earth science in a title-one high school in Harlem, NYC.
My students are primarily freshmen and sophomores who range in ages from 14 to 18. The student body mostly consists of Latinos and African-Americans. My students' interests are very diverse- my students enjoy reading, writing, mathematics, music and video production, fashion, soccer, basketball--and now-- science. Many students are in the English as a Second Language program. I have students who have immigrated from other countries, and I have students who have never left the NYC borders.
The school in which I teach provides limited after-school activities for the student body; therefore, my students lack school pride. However, I would love to encourage my students' interests and growth in education. I want to provide my students the opportunity a trip that will encourage learning, play, and school pride.
My Project
In the Earth Science classroom we learn about natural processes such as photosynthesis, the carbon-oxygen cycle, erosion and weathering, glaciation, and more. Some of these processes you can see in New York City; however, some amazing land formation created by stream or wind erosion cannot be seen in the "concrete jungle." Camp Manice provides students the ability to make the images in text books and PowerPoint slides tangible. Camp Manice will split my class into smaller groups to experience forests and streams through educational hikes. The students will be interested because they will be able to see these processes they learned actually occur in a natural setting. It will be used as a review before taking their standardized, Earth Science, Regents' state exam.
Not only will the students be able to make what they learn tangible, Camp Manice does team building/leadership initiatives that will foster stronger relationships among my students.
They will learn to think critically and fix a problem together. These are skills that will be able to transfer in whatever they decide to do upon graduating.
