My Students

I teach a second-grade classroom full of boisterous, caring, endearing and hardworking students who come from a diverse range of learning abilities, socio-economic backgrounds, and ethnic, racial and cultural differences. Our elementary school is one of many in the town. It is one of the most diverse in terms of its student population. Earth Day has come and gone, but my students want to know what they can do to continue to help make a positive change in our world. So, let's make this happen!

My Project

Earth Day is Every Day: Let's Lend a Helping Hand! That is the theme in my second-grade classroom and we are learning about being good citizens in our community. One way we can all work together to make a difference is by joining forces and pitching in to clean up the litter around our school community. The gardening gloves, protective glasses, and trash bags will come in use during our cleanup. If we show our concern for taking care of our school grounds, others will follow and join our mission.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." We recently read a story called "Something Beautiful." The main character saw nothing beautiful in her urban neighborhood because of the trash, poverty, and vandalism.

One day, her teacher wrote the word B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L on the board and asked the children what their something beautiful was. This young girl decided to search for her something beautiful and learned a powerful lesson in the process. By cleaning up around the front stoop of her apartment building and planting colorful flowers in the community garden, the young girl was on her way to finding her beauty.

Well, my second-grade class is going to learn how to find their something beautiful by using the gardening tools to help maintain the school grounds and making a garden outside of our classroom window. We will plant seeds and flowers in our garden and read about how to take care of the seeds. Hopefully, others will take notice of our hard work and appreciate these efforts.

We hope you will be inspired to fund our project and thank you in advance for taking the time to read about our hopes and dreams.
