My students need reusable items such as aluminum straws, grocery bags, and water bottles to help reduce the waste in our environment! The dessert cups will be used to temporarily host pine seedlings we will plant.
My class is made up of 18 vibrant and energetic kids. While our Title-One school is small, the potential of our students is great! The benefit of living in a small rural community is that we are all like family to each other. Friendships formed in this community are life-long. We are a diverse group of students, with many different cultures, personalities and interests. Every day is a new adventure!
As an educator, I feel it is my job to not only teach academics, but also social skills and lessons students can use outside of the classroom as well.
I hope as my students leave my classroom in June, they will not only have shown growth in their academics, but also will have gained respect, responsibility, confidence, friendships, good work habits, and many other character traits that they will use in their future.
Thank you for supporting our classroom!
My Project
My students are currently learning about the great impact that simple actions can have in our environment. As a class we are going to research the harmful effects of straws, plastic bags, and unnecessary use of drink containers, and how they can injure and even kill animals in the wild. To make this a larger impact and involve other members of the community, each family will receive a few of the aluminum straws in hopes that they will also take the challenge to reduce their level of waste as much as possible.
Each student will receive a reusable water bottle, grocery bag, and a few straws for their family.
This unit will correlate with Earth Day. We will read Dr. Seuss' book, "The Lorax," and plant pine seedlings in our orange containers that will be made to look like the Lorax. These seedlings will be brought home with planting instructions. Students will know that even as children, they have the ability to make small changes that can have a HUGE impact on our Earth. Why should Earth Day be only one day a year? We must raise awareness so it can be a change of lifestyle. The future of our Earth depends on our children today!
