I am a sixth grade English Language Arts teacher at Denham Springs Junior High School in Denham Springs, Louisiana. Our school is located near Baton Rouge and we have welcomed students who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Months later, many of these students are still struggling because their families have lost so much. Reading stories, novels, and poetry transports them, at least temporarily, to a completely different world. It is extremely rewarding to be able to encourage these students in their personal journey, as well as challenge them to continue their quest for academic excellence in the midst of tragedy.
In addition to the students displaced by Hurricane Katrina, I also teach in an inclusion setting. An inclusion classroom means that I have both special- and general-education students, and I work in a collaborative, team-teaching setting.
Being able to read books with the assistance of audio CDs plays a crucial role in helping insure that students with learning disabilities can reach their highest academic potential. I have found that the use audio books seem to provide a sense of comfort for the students who have come into my classroom since the hurricane.
The small CD player that I currently have in my classroom has poor volume output. Therefore, I would like to request a home theater surround sound system. This system would provide an excellent environment for reading instruction, as well as an unparalleled experience of reading enjoyment. This type of system would also play the DVDs that I use to supplement instruction and enhance understanding of difficult units of study. For example, I would love for my students to be able to watch "Anne Frank" after we read Number the Stars, a novel about the Holocaust. It helps students to be able to see and hear since many of them are visual learners.
I wish you could take a glimpse into my classroom and get to see my 75 students in a personal way. In spite of their personal challenges, they smile, laugh and work hard daily to be the best that they can be. I would greatly appreciate your help in helping improve their classroom environment with this sound system. These students and those to come in the future will reap the abundant benefits.
