Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Pre-kindergarten is a grade full of great memories for students and teachers. This is the first time these little ones get out of their homes independently. My twenty-two little students are four to five-year-olds, living their very first academic experience of their lives. All of them are English learners and most of them are economically disadvantaged.
Last year, my whole district was affected by Hurricane Harvey.
We had to leave our school and were separated into four different campuses. Those schools did not have enough classrooms for us, so we had to teach in libraries, gyms, stages and other available space. It was very difficult, but we got through it somehow.
I am aware that all my students had to deal with Harvey in their homes because the hurricane affected all the areas that our district covers. I will have to be there to assure them that they are safe being away from home and that their needs will be met.
My Project
The items I requested for this project (candy and small toys) will be used to open up a classroom store in which students can buy candies or small toys with play money that they will earn by performing various tasks. Each task (attendance, homework, good behavior, active participation) will have a certain amount of money and as students complete the tasks, they will be awarded that amount of money. This will teach my students the importance of working hard to earn the money that they will spend, but it will also teach them to save their money if they want something that is more expensive than what they earned that week. It is never too early to teach kids how to earn money and spend it wisely!
