Many of our students do not understand the cause and effect of money. Many feel they are entitled to anything they want without having the funds.
We have 540 students with 70% free or reduced lunch.
Many families are on welfare or squeezing by on minimum wage. The kids need the opportunity to learn about money without a lecture format. Picture books and novels can describe why we need money, how it works, how to save and more. Students do make the connection between books and reality and place themselves in the role of the main character. In addition, the non-fiction books I selected will go further into depth on how to earn and respect money.
My Project
When funded, I will work with Wells Fargo Bank, one of our school's business partners, to assist with a program to help student's learn to save some of their birthday money, and how to earn money. Earn money, save a portion, give a portion, spend what is necessary. The materials will be added to the library collection for all students to have access. I am hoping to provide "piggy banks" for students who take this opportunity seriously.
Sometimes, and I do mean sometimes, students will share things that they learn at school with their parents.
Some of the materials also have to do with not wasting money, like leaking faucets, and turning off the lights. These suggestions will help with the family budget as much as it will our students. Some of our older students could help their home life by making occasional contributions to the grocery bill by paying for something they want that parents can't pay for.
