I teach the W.V. Student Success Standards in classes titled "Developmental Guidance" to Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade students. I do not have an adequate curriculum to last the entire school year for Kindergarten and First Grades. I completely lack a curriculum to use with Pre-K. Despite the lack of an evidence based curriculum, our students are curious about social/emotional topics. These students listen attentively and are eager to discuss the lessons that I have pulled together from books and other sources.
We are a small rural elementary school in southern West Virginia.
All students at Athens School receive free breakfast and lunch.
Students gain a tremendous amount of knowledge, confidence, and independence from being in school at this early age.
Our students have large emotions packed into their little bodies! They need social & emotional (SEL) instruction that will help them become successful inter-personally as well as academically. However, at this time I lack a social-emotional curriculum to use with our youngest learners. Learning how to deal with our own feelings and those of our friends is a lifelong skill.
My Project
We all know someone who seems book-smart but lacks social sense. We often assume everyone learns social and emotional skills without direct instruction but this not the case. Instruction from the Circle of Education EduPod Module will help students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to recognize and manage their emotions, demonstrate caring and concern for others, establish positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and handle challenging situations constructively.
The EduPod module is aligned to all State learning standards and a wide range of assessment tools.
It supports academic learning through Social & Emotional Wellness. It includes activities with detailed instructions and goals, educational songs and tuneTOON's (3D animation), puppet and expression cards. Social and emotional instruction should start early in Pre-K and Kindergarten along with letters and numbers and continue until graduation.
