Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a great population of children. My students struggle with communication, and for that reason my days with them are spent being engaged and animated since we learn language by hearing and being surrounded by it. We also work on academics; the students I work with are cognitively delayed and struggle to grasp concepts that many of us take for granted. In addition, some are also orthopedically impaired (physical impairments that affect a child's walking, running, etc.) and require physical therapy, occupational therapy, and/or Adaptive P.E, as they struggle with gross and fine motor movements.
To see students transform from having very little language to pointing out something simple like a bus, a bird, or even just using a phrase such as "Uh oh" in an appropriate setting or understanding early mathematics concepts is an amazing and indescribable feeling.
My students come to me with very little language, sometimes barely even muttering. Many times this inability and frustration with communicating results in behavior issues. However, with time and patience, you see their inappropriate behaviors decrease, and their personalities burst and shine as they acquire language.
My Project
Each of these items will make a great difference for my students not only now in preschool but in their future lives. My students learn best when activities are hands-on and fun. These items are all hands-on, colorful, and engaging and will help my students not only learn skills but also love learning.
The dressing frames and nuts And bolts toys will help my children develop their fine motor skills (the tiny muscles in our fingers that allow us to do detailed tasks, such as zippers and buttons).
The magnetic letter builders and patterning and sorting game will help them learn early literacy and mathematics skills.
