My students need visual and tactile objects such as Big Book Storytelling Activity Kits and Alphabet Sounds Teaching Tubs to keep them interested in early literacy.
We have an intensive 3-hr SDC program that encompasses all developmental domains. We introduce early literacy, incorporate music & movement, & utilize LOTS of visual & tactile materials. Students with Autism learn differently than most, so I cater my teaching towards their individual needs.
My students are preschool-aged (3-5 years) and have a special education eligibility for Autism services.
Most of them fall within the moderate to severe range. They have limited, if any, functional speech. All of them receive speech and language services and some receive occupational therapy through our school district. My staff and I focus primarily on behavior management and alternate modes of communication. In our classroom, the students love to sing and dance. When learning something new, it is important for them to have multiple visual aids and sensory cues.
My Project
The Big Book Storytelling Activity Kits and Alphabet Sounds Teaching Tubs will be used during our group circle time and small work stations to develop phonemic awareness and letter recognition. The big books provide larger print for the students as well as interactive materials to make the stories fun and engaging. Furthermore, the selected materials create an interactive lesson and introduce new and relevant vocabulary. They will be useful when implementing reading and speech goals and will help to assess present levels of awareness. The materials are age-appropriate and easy to organize.
By donating to this project, you are helping my students learn early literacy skills.
As a result, I am able to focus on actual instruction & implementation. You will contribute to the development of age-appropriate vocabulary & the maintenance of an engaging and interaction learning experience. Early literacy skills are essential for academic success, especially when verbal communication skills are lacking in this population. This project makes learning more fun!
