Our town is a close-knit community within the broader city of Detroit. Our students come from many different countries, speaking Arabic, Bengali, Urdu, Bosnian, Polish, Swahili and others. Many come from high poverty or war-torn countries where even basic education was difficult or impossible. They start their school-life here in America with many challenges.
As we transition to online learning, English learners face tremendous challenges.
Navigating online resources is much more difficult in a second language, or with poor reading skills. Many lack computers, tablets or internet access. Other share with many siblings. Still others are working to provide for their families or caring for younger siblings. They need extra support at this time.
My Project
Many students are struggling to get motivated for online work. The wireless earbuds in this project will be used as rewards for the students who have the highest engagement in our distance learning activities. Working at home is tough for all students, but it much more challenging for English learners in underserved communities.
I want to offer wireless earphones as an exciting reward for students who stay engaged during online learning.
We all need encouragement to keep our motivation high. Students love earphones, and they will also help them learn at home, blocking out distractions.
