Ear-resistable Classroom Engagement and Blocks, Oh My!
Help me give my students headphones to use with our ThinkPads, 2 mousepads to replace the tattered ones on our desktop computers, as well as magnatiles and mega blocks to enhance creativity, learning and problem solving skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students enjoy learning through various activities and outlets. We learn using books and manipulatives, as well as using Think Pads and technology (smart board). While not all technology is good technology, when used in an academic setting in our classroom, it has proven both positive and needed.
I have seen a dramatic increase in student participation when it comes to hands-on learning, which has resulted in a more concrete understanding of comprehension and computation skills.
Let's face it, some students know more about technology than I do! I enjoy watching them learn, problem solve and identify and make connections with new ideas through their exploration with manipulatives and technology.
My Project
Technology has become a facet used in just about every aspect of our daily lives. About 92% of children aged 2-17 play video and computer games, and 59% of children and adolescents use the internet both academically and personally.
It goes without saying that technology has become an integral part of teaching and learning in the classroom as well.
We use student think pads in the classroom during guided reading to work on phonics, reading comprehension and fluency. We use them during math to build concrete number sense as well as practice our addition and subtraction facts. This is where the student headphones and mouse pads would be beneficial in our classroom.
We also use a variety of manipulatives to build, create and problem solve. It enhances physical, social and cognitive skills as well as helps students develop their mathematical and spatial reasoning. This is where the magnatiles and blocks will enhance our classroom.
