My students need recognition for their positive contributions to our school community. The materials will be given as tokens of appreciation at assemblies when they SOAR. They are also practical school supplies students need at school.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Title I, culturally-mixed urban middle school has 650 students. 29% of our students have five or more absences. 71% receive free or reduced price lunch. The failure rate in core classes at 6th grade is 8%, 7th grade is 7% and for 8th grade is 11%. There's a connection between students failing and families in crisis. Our Family Resource Center gives 65 students a backpack of food that doesn’t require cooking each Friday for needy families. Twelve students a month go to the clothing bank, a majority live in two households. We have 200 students who are Special Education, 49 English-language learners. For these students, academic work isn't a priority or they don’t have the academic support at home to be successful at school. If students don't have a strong school connection and little support at home, they may not be successful academically.
The materials for this project will be used as incentives to thank students for contributing to our school community through their positive behavior and hard work.
We want our students to be proud of their accomplishments and make their perception of middle school a positive experience.
My Project
Our school is working to make our school a positive learning community and a place students want to come to learn. We have a positive behavior system in place where students follow guidelines to be SAFE (S); OWN (O) own their behavior and take responsibility for their actions; ACHIEVE (A) in academics; and show RESPECT (R) to each other and the school staff. When they act in these positive ways; they are rewarded with a positive signature. Students with clean cards (no negative signatures) receive rewards like lunch with the principal, early lunch release, open gym time. We need more rewards for students with positive signatures, which is what the donorschoose.org materials request will provide. A majority of our students are low income and we have chosen rewards that are fun but also useful for their success in school (erasers, highlighters, pencils, lanyards). While they need these materials to be successful, they enjoy being acknowledged for SOARing at school. Too often we forget to celebrate the every day accomplishments of our students. This gives us an opportunity to let our students know we appreciate their contributions. We have a huge spirit assembly where students play games against faculty members and we honor those students who have clean cards, perfect attendance, and positive signatures. The students enjoy the assemblies and we invite parents to join in. It is a lot of fun for the students and staff and has changed the attitude of many of our students. They want to come to school and love to have bragging rights when they receive these small tokens of appreciation. Any student may qualify to earn the prizes, and it is wonderful to see the quiet student and never appreciated or one who is always in trouble to be recognized when they SOAR.
