My students need 4 Samsung Chromebooks with 4GB Memory and 32GB to be able to access the multiple technology sources that we use in STEM and AIM on a daily basis.
EGMS is a large urban public school with almost 1030 students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with the majority of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the Bossier Parish with a very active military influence.
As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
Our school is home to one of the best STEM programs in the parish. Our students compete in many multifaceted robotics competitions. We teach our students to be innovators and practice the process of iteration which encourages a growth mindset. We are also home to a STAR Base program where our students conduct research alongside of college professors and military members. Our STAR Base Program houses students who are interested in hands on experiences that will last them a lifetime. We meet the needs of a multitude of students through our Destination Imagination program where students have a means of exercising their creativity and talents. There are a variety of teams and clubs that fit the needs of everyone.
My Project
The vision of this program is to transform the classroom to become conducive to the teaching and learning of 21st-century skills; these are skills necessary for learners to be successful in their future careers and personal lives. These skills can be categorized into three groups; learning skills, literacy skills, and life skills.
Learning skills encompasses critical thinking, creative thinking, collaborating, and communicating.
Literacy skills include information literacy, media literacy, and technology literacy. Life skills include flexibility, initiative, social skills, productivity, and leadership.
The acquisition of these skills happens both in part by the deliberate concentration on these skills in the classroom and also by the way the students are positioned in the classroom for learning.
To successfully place students for learning these skills the teacher must set up the class so that the focus in on the students and the students have direct access to the tools they need to develop these skills. The teacher then can design projects where the students are forced to learn effective ways of working with others, using technology, and accessing information.
