My students need a projector to improve literacy and math skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students struggle with basic math, reading, and writing skills. To help them with these skills I play many songs and videos on my computer, they are memorized by them. I can already see some of their basic skills improving!
I have 18 energetic and eager 1st graders.
They are from a high-poverty community with 99% of the students receiving free or reduced price lunch. This school is the original school building built in the 1960s. It has had some repairs but many classrooms have water stains on the ceilings and a cool draft comes in from the leaky windows. Besides many of the cosmetic disadvantages the school contains, the community is very committed to the academic achievement of each child. Everyday many of the students come in anxious to learn and to "grow their brains." Even in 1st grade, students are aware of the power of education and its power to get you to and through college.
I am asking for a projector. The projector will be used to project basic math, reading, and math songs and videos. When I show my students the songs and videos they are looking at a tiny 14 inch computer screen I am holding up. With a projector added to the class, the students will be better engaged. An unused document camera will be able to be utilized with the projector. I will use the document camera along with the projector to project worksheets, model different concepts in math, reading, and writing. This will help in so many ways. With so many students being visual learners, being able to visually follow along, rather than just verbally, will be extremely helpful. I will be able to better model math, reading and writing. Students will be better able to translate what I am teaching into their learning because they will have the same manipulative or worksheet on their desk.
In conclusion, the use of a projector in my classroom will undoubtedly improve students basic math, reading, and writing skills.
Showing songs and videos will help and engage more students. I will also be able to use a document camera, which will help students follow along and learn better.
