I am a third grade teacher in a Title One school located in the Bronx, New York. During the course of the school day my students produce a tremendous amount of writing. I am a firm believer that writing will increase learning in all subjects. However, there are numerous occasions where my kids could use a different, and dare one say, a more fun medium to write upon. That is where erasable boards on easels come in handy. One project that these boards would enhance is the Author Study. Not only can the students write a report, but they can easily demonstrate their authors style of writing. Also, the struggling writers can use the board to demonstrate illustrations. The use of these boards during our reading block is unlimited. Children can draw graphic organizers to emphasize their viewpoints, keep track of vocabulary throughout the book and write potential questions for further research. Another activity that would benefit my students is whole class writing, where each child is responsible for adding one sentence to an ongoing story. The story can be later made into a class book, but meanwhile, children will have the story in front of them. This allows them to practice such skills as sequencing, interesting vocabulary, and making sure a story makes sense. Thank you for your kind consideration.
