Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten students are so excited to learn and are especially eager to apply their learning through hands-on activities. A large percentage of my classroom students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
Since kindergarten is sometimes my students' first experience in school, I want to make sure that we provide a solid foundation with lots of rich and meaningful education.
Students in my class are of diverse backgrounds and speak different languages at home. Their English language levels range from beginning to advanced.
Based on our school's statistics, over 85% of our student population comes from a lower socioeconomic status. Unfortunately, socioeconomic status can affect the quality of life as well as the opportunities and privileges given to them. So, at school, we try our best to provide our students with the necessary materials, but the range of needs is very wide.
With that said, equipping students with necessary materials can help give students that rich learning experience and help close gaps.
My Project
My class love when we have the opportunity to engineer a structure. At this moment, since we are at home, I want to make sure my students have these items that they can keep and build over and over again. Engineers will also need materials like notebooks and clipboards to draw their designs and document their trial and errors along with their thought process.
It is imperative that we provide students with ample opportunities to innovate and create and STEM learning materials will allow students explore while learning.
STEM is a huge component in all grade levels and it is especially important to start this journey early, as young as kindergarten. This is the time where kids enjoy exploring and trying things out, so with this, it will open so many more avenues for them.
