Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My wonderful third graders call central New Mexico home. Our school is located in the biggest city in NM, in a residential neighborhood near a high school and many businesses. My students are enthusiastic, kind, and eager to learn. One of my favorite parts of our school is the amount of diversity! In my class I have students from many backgrounds and from families speaking languages from around the world! We also have a large population of native american students representing several different tribes.
Financial literacy, explored through hands on, interactive, exiting activities, could quite literally change their lives.
Over 99% of the students at my school qualify for free and reduced lunch. If they could not only learn about the basic concepts of economics, but actually practice them, it could have a ripple of effects for their whole lives. My students are passionate and enthusiastic, but they truly learn best through hands on experiences.
My Project
As my students move through our economics unit they will dive into exciting books, play games and experience financial literacy first hand as they explore the important concepts of barter, scarcity, opportunity costs, producers and consumers, budgets and market places.
These games, activities, and especially project supplies, will give my students the tools and understanding they need to become entrepreneurs!
The "Exploring Economy Hands-On Activities" will provide my students with lessons, activities, games and manipulatives to learn about producers and consumers, saving and spending, and the supply chain. And think there are many important lessons to be learned from classic board game play - The Game of Life and Monopoly Junior!
I also have requested some wonderful books which students can explore independently as their curiosity grows as well as books we can read together as a class. This addition will let our economics unit continue outside of our social studies time.
The most exciting pieces of our unit, and the pieces that I would struggle to provide to my students without your support, are "Barter Day" and "Market Day". On "Barter Day" students will be given small bags filled with prizes and toys from the Jumbo Assortment which they will then have to barter and trade with their classmates to get the toys they really want. "Market Day" will be the culminating activity. Students will create a business plan and a product that they will actually create using the art supplies. Then they will "sell" their product to their classmates. Finally, they will reflect on the financial success of their business compared to the materials cost, time and labor.
I truly believe that these hands on experiences with economics will impact their thinking about money for the rest of their lives. My eager, enthusiastic, entrepreneurs need you!
