My students are very active, full of life, happy, and ambitious. They come to school everyday ready to learn with big smiles on their faces, always wanting to give me a high-five, a hug, or a wave hello. They are very eager to learn and love to sit with books and turn pages over and over again. They can all match their letters, numbers 1-10, shapes, colors, and point to their name.
I teach students in a primary self-contained room, who are non-verbal, not potty trained, struggle in social situations and inflict self-injury, have a limited understanding of language, are developmentally behind their peers, and have moderate to severe disabilities.
For the most part, my students come from stable homes, with loving and supportive families that want their child to learn at their developmental level.
My Project
These resources will be used during reading and writing to support the students by giving them hands on opportunities to build their school readiness skills. The alphabet object tubs will help students begin to recognize words that begin with the same letter, demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each, sort common objects into categories (e.g., shapes, foods) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent. The big book activity sets will help the students look at pictures in books, become familiar with book concepts, and engage them during read aloud. The sing-along songs and book will help the students follow verbal directions paired with visuals through dance and rhythm. The songs also encourage the students to play and interact with one another in a fun structured setting
This project will directly support my students in becoming life long readers.
