Do you remember what it felt like the first time you were able to read a book? My students are starting the process of learning how to read. Given the right kind of books and resources their worlds will be open to all kinds of wonderful possibilities.
I am going to be teaching a class full of eager, open minded and excited kindergartners.
For many this is their first year in school and I want to start it off with a bang! We are a Charter school in Florida, so many of the supplies are not provided for us. Having books my students can read and enjoy will really set the tone for their future love of reading, something I hope to instill in all of my kids. When I see their faces light up when they read a word for the first time, it makes my heart burst with happiness! I love to read and hope that all of my students will too!
My Project
My students need a circle time chart and CD, a set of Step into Reading books, and a Sight Word Tales set to help them develop their reading skills. By having the books I selected in my class, the students will be able to learn to read at their own pace. By starting out with "just right books," the kids will be able to read the book from beginning to end without getting discouraged. My students will not only learn how to read, they will learn to love books and that a good book can take you anywhere your imagination will allow. We will use the stories on a daily basis in our class library and during our guided reading time. During guided reading, we will read the books together and I can monitor their progress. In the classroom library, the students will be able to choose a book and read it using the skills they have been learning. Some students may not have access to many books at home that is why I am trying to build my library and make it wonderful for my kids. The leveled reading books will be a huge help in our class and myself and my kids thank you for anything you are able to do!
I am a first time teacher just starting out, and would love any help I can get in providing my kids with the stories they will need to help them learn to read.
To be able to open a book and read it will inspire my students to use their imaginations and picture the places in the stories. Most importantly, by having these books in my class the kids will get the beginning skills needed to read higher level books later on in the year. Thank you for any support you are willing to provide my students.
