Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of eager learners in a rising school in East Harlem, NYC. Formerly a failing school, we are now succeeding, and all of our students major in one of the performing or visual arts. We are a small school, and our budget doesn't match our ambition! My students are lucky to have visual art every day at school, but my drawing supplies are depleted. This is my first year teaching these extremely talented but economically disadvantaged students. My goal is for students to build their skills and experiment with new materials to develop their potential as young artists and creative critical thinkers.
I expect students to improve their attention and focus in art class, which I know from experience will carry over into their academic subjects.
Art is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to be successful and improve their self-esteem. I have high expectations for my wonderful students and school!
My Project
All great art starts with drawing. I will begin the new school year by teaching contour line technique, a curvy line that is used to capture the essence of an object, its outside edges and inside details all rendered with continuous sinuous attention! To keep the drawing materials as exciting as the technique, students will use white Gelly Roll ink on black paper, and black Ball Point ink on white paper, experimenting with these alternating values and contour line techniques.
Students will learn to look with fresh eyes, to draw what they see, not what they think they know about a still-life object.
This improves students' perceptual (observational) skills, increases hand/eye coordination, and develops the ability to see and record complex information. After this lesson, my students will be ready for any new materials and methods.
