As the weather gets colder and my students are unable to go outdoors, they are grabbing books to read during their recess time or asking to come up during lunch to finish reading the next chapter. My students enjoy borrowing books to take home or just to finish reading once their assignments are complete. Most parents have informed me that reading books has become more intriguing than playing on their X-Boxes at home. As a teacher, this has become such an inspiring and motivating thing to witness as my students move away from technological devices to actually reading books and having meaningful discussions.
I am a believer that students must have access to authentic and credible literature so their minds can be molded in the most impressionable ways.
As a teacher, I am fully aware that reading can take their imagination places near and far away. Moreover, I am mindful of the types of books I have on display within my library. Therefore, having students being able to borrow books and read them at their leisure speaks volumes.

As I look through the book bins in my classroom before silent sustained reading, I noticed that my students are reading books at a higher reading level. I have ordered books from the New York Public Library; however, most of the time, my students were not finished reading the texts or would like to use the texts much longer. Therefore, having more high-interest leveled books in their classroom library would be beneficial.
It has become challenging when there are not enough higher leveled books and high-interest books to keep them engaged while I am meeting with my guided reading groups.
I noticed my students would just flip through the pages not interested or intrigued with the reading task. I am kindly requesting chapter books as they are reading on and above grade level. It is one of my greatest endeavors to build a community of learners, who love to read at school and at home. I intend to create a lending library with these books to encourage reading at home as well.
Having access to these materials will enable my students to have a variety of texts in which they can read, discuss, and write brief summaries and begin to look more deeply at various characters. Most importantly, the implementation of rigorous questions and lessons will be created in which students will work on author studies. Essentially, they will begin to compare and contrast texts and be more creative in asking and answering text-based questions with specific details from the texts.
