Help me strengthen my students' understanding and social-emotional learning skills with a program that allows them to teach what they are learning to someone at home.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are all male 6-12th graders who are striving for admittance into the best high schools and/or colleges with the ultimate goal of becoming career and college ready.
They are very inquisitive, and I've taught them how to enjoy the world of science.
They love to discover. They enjoy the possibility of learning a new concept on their own. They love the hands on and collaboration that science provides. My school is a gender based (all male) STEM School. We are a 6 - 12 school in the urban environment of Baltimore. Our school has many challenges; from shortage of teachers to supplies, being centered in an urban food desert, and poverty striken families where many of our students are homeless. We rely heavily on community support.
We are hoping that this program will assist us in transforming the relationships between students, teachers and families at our all male urban STEM Academy. The ultimate goal is to increase student knowledge and performance to meet academic standards in all Core Subjects and District Assessments. We are excited to expand on an academic strategy, Peer to Peer learning that our teachers already use in the classroom to our families at home. "Research has found that this learning by teaching strategy results in better comprehension and recall."
This program will also increase parent engagement, communication and relationships.
We can't emphasize enough how important parent engagement is in the success of their scholar. This program will allow parents to gain a deeper understanding of what their scholar is learning, allowing for those important academic conversations to continue at home. These interactions will eventually become organic, leading to increased student outcomes.
