"I come from a family with a lot of dead people."
This is the first line in this amazing novel! The reason Comfort, the main character, lives with a lot of dead people is because her family runs the community funeral home!
I read this book aloud for the first time with my students this year. They were hooked from the very beginning!
I teach 26 of the most intriguing 5th graders. Coming from a low-income community, high quality novel sets are hard to come by. This group of high-energy students said that I really need to read this book with every class I ever teach from now on!
The only problem with continuing to teach this book with future classes is that I don't have a set of these books. I begged and borrowed from teachers, even teachers from other districts, until I gathered up enough copies to read this novel as a whole group. Still, after all was said and done, several students had to share a copy of the book.
With a set of 30 copies of "Each Little Bird That Sings," I would never have to worry about not having enough books again! Students wouldn't have to share and I wouldn't have to struggle and fight to track down enough reading materials!
This book really exposes students to the many harsh realities of life in a precious, sensitive manner. Many of my students described this book as the best book they have ever read! Students had many "wow!" moments and experienced many different emotions throughout the novel. By reading this book, my students become more mature students and learned not to take life for granted.
Exposing students to high-quality literature is a top priority for me. I only read books with my students that have a deeper meaning or teach a life lesson. With your donation my students now, and for years to come, could delve into this amazing story and face life head on!
