I believe that children should love to come to school and enjoy learning everyday. Every child can learn and this is why I work my hardest every day to make sure each of my students has what they need to succeed.
A day without laughter and challenged minds is a day wasted.
I have a diverse group of students in an area of moderate poverty.
My students work hard each day to reach the high standards put forth in the common core. They approach each day with a positive attitude and have a thirst for knowledge. My students have a wide range of ability both in math and reading. I have students who are both reading on a 6th grade level, as well as those that are reading below a 4th grade level. This can sometimes create problems when trying to find appropriate materials, but myself and my colleagues work to overcome this however we can.
My school is one that prides itself on creating an environment where children feel safe, show respect and are consistently responsible. We celebrate the diversity among our students and help to address the wide variety of behavior and educational needs in this K-5 school.
My Project
In my classroom, it has become increasingly difficult to access independent reading books for my students that are both on their "just right" level and that they are interested in reading.
The students that are struggling the most in reading, are the students who have the most trouble finding books they enjoy. Through using e-readers in the classroom, students have access to not only amazon books but also hundreds of libraries throughout the state.
I recently purchased one e-reader to see how it would impact my classroom and the motivation of these struggling readers. During a three week time, my most struggling reader has completed 2 books on his "just right" level. Most importantly, his attitude towards reading is more positive then ever. My goal is to get ALL of my students this excited about reading and help each of them to continue to grow.
Many of the students I work with would never be able to afford to have an e-reader at home.
Through providing these in the classroom, students can have endless access to books that are perfect for them and help them to become life-long readers and life-long learners. My goal is for EVERY one of my students to LOVE reading and continue to 5th grade on grade level.
