Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading is a vital part of a child's educational success. For my students with Autism Spectrum Disorder reading is a struggle. Having the ability to utilize technology to gain access to a variety of reading materials and to motivate my readers would be monumental to their success.
All of my 5th and 6th grade students are Autistic.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. As a result of their disability, they face significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. They also face many intellectual challenges particularly in the are of reading. All of my students live in a high poverty and crime area. However, they are not products of their environment.
My Project
I am requesting an Barnes and Noble Nook Color with 16GB of memory. My students will be able to radically improve their reading fluency and comprehension. Most of all, I want to use this motivation to foster a love of reading. Students will have access to a classroom library of books far beyond what I can provide. This e-Reader will excite the students, allow them to utilize their love for electronics and motivate them to become better readers.
Most of my students read 2-3 years below grade level, but this e-Reader will be a tool to encourage them to keep reading.
My 10 students will share the e-Reader throughout the school year. I will also check the e-Reader out to the parents over the weekend and holidays so the students can read at home. The impact will reach beyond this school year because these students will develop an interest in reading, which is beneficial to their success in all areas of their lives.
