E PūPūKahi I Holomua - Let's Work Together to Progress
Help me give my students a positive start to the new school year by providing them with the necessary school supplies to jump right into learning from day one.
My Hawaiian language immersion first graders thrive on social interaction, hands-on and experiential-based learning. They practice reading, spelling, writing and math in Hawaiian daily. Aside from that they also learn hula, art, Hawaiian history and culture as well as environmental studies. They are being taught to be observers of the world around us and to make inferences based on their observations. It is my hope that we can rear environmentally mindful cultural practitioners. Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they are being educated remotely 2-3 times a day on Zoom.
Learning a language happens by continuous immersion in a language-rich environment where one has many opportunities to practice and improve their language skills.
However, without all day access to a fluent speaker (their teacher) and the language support of their peers, regression is inevitable. Most of my students’ families cannot speak Hawaiian and rely on translations of my instruction and assignments to help their child at home. Their language deficiencies have been an obstacle and an additional stress, but they are committed to do what it takes to support the Hawaiian language immersion education of their child.
My Project
They will be journaling and recording their daily observations in their primary notebooks, using the portfolios to store their weekly reading and spelling work, doing math and using graphic organizers in the unruled tablets - all while utilizing a variety of writing tools to aide in language acquisition and to meet grade level standards.
Providing the class with these supplies will give each child an equal opportunity to learn and grow.
I would like nothing more than to have each student start off the new school year with excitement and positivity. Let's give them something to look forward to beyond the mandated quarantine period.
