I teach at a Title I Achievement school in Florida where 98% percent of the students are enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. For many students, the food provided at school is the only meal that they have for the day. Some of my students are also homeless, live in single-parent/ extended family homes or are with foster families.
From an e-learning and educational perspective, my students who are very internet savvy, do not have tools or internet connection to be academically successful.
Many students lack the experiences that other students in high socio-economic families have where the parents are engaged in their child's e-learning and able to access the technology required to be successful in this e-learning process.
It is imperative that my students can be immersed in activities that are more engaging, interesting, and fun by using the technology. Fortunately, HEF (district non-profit organization) is helping with "Hotspots" so parents can use the devices at home. Parents that have several children in school do not have a device for each child as such it is difficult for children to attend the e-learning process.
My Project
The students will be able to use the Fire HD 7 tablet to access the programs that my district is offering so the students can e-learn at home. Although the district has given one laptop per family, it is not enough for a family of 4 or more children in a household to attend the e-learning sessions.
The Fire HD 7 tablets will allow my students, who do not have a technology tool at home, to learn by accessing the district e-learning sessions.
Some of my students are not able to access the e-learning meetings with me as two children need to access at the same time the one technology tool provided to them by school. Having Fire HD will enable my students to be proactive and attend the ZOOM lessons with me.
