Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted ten years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Six years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning and it has provided a positive learning environment for each student.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
All of my kindergarteners students get the amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to 12. Close to 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
An easel in the classroom that can adjustable and that is magnetic will provide so much to my students than our current grey chalkboard that is too high for kindergarteners to be actively using it.
This portable and adjustable easel will provide so many opportunities for my students, from making CVC and CVCV words using magnetic letters to practicing our handwriting as they learn how to read and write in Spanish.
They will be able to add to our charts and interact more during our literacy mini lessons. This will allow me to check for understating and to model more phonic activities. The easel can also be moved close to students if needed while they work at their tables. Another advantage is that students would be able to use it during literacy centers to practice making works with magnetic letter, practicing their names, capital and lower case letters or looking for words during write the room time.
Our current chalkboard could better be use for updating the date, posting our daily learning targets and for taping our processed charts and the goal is to have this adjustable easel as our active learning board for our daily lessons.
