Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 3rd graders have a new curriculum that stresses multiculturalism...but we're scrambling to find materials for them. Donors Choose has the answer! It offers e-books on multiculturalism. They are easily accessible and packed with info and activities. Please help us offer them to our students!
Before I tell you more about the e-books, let me give you some background about our school.
It is a K-8 Center located in South Florida. We teach our children the 'International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program'. The curriculum is vigorous and fun - but we really need to invest in new teaching resources. Unfortunately, our school is not affluent. In fact, it is a 'Title 1' institution, which means that the majority of our students come from households with incomes so low that they receive free or reduced lunch. Over 80% of our children speak a language other than English at home. This is because our parents are often immigrants, with low-paying jobs in local hotels and restaurants. Our PTA is not as well-funded as some other schools'. To keep our school well-stocked with teaching supplies, we really need the help of organizations such as Donors Choose.
My Project
Back to the e-books. How will they help my third graders? What's so special about them? First, they have many themes. They describe cultures, especially holidays and religions, found inside and outside the U.S. They are fun. They are colorful. The teacher can download them in whole or in part and use them as hand-outs for lessons. These e-books should be a huge help, not just to the 20+ students in my classroom, but to the approximately 100 students in our school's third grade.
We are thrilled to be implementing our new multicultural curriculum - but we are not the most affluent of schools, and we face serious challenges in acquiring good teaching resources.
The e-books offered by Donors Choose are a great solution to our problem. They will impact scores of children. Since they are non-perishable, we'll be able to use them for years to come. Won't you please help me acquire them for all our third graders?
