Dystopic Daydreams: Leveled Dystopian Texts for Book Clubs
Help me give my students a leveled selection of dystopian texts to help push their thinking about both literature, and their own world. My students will read everything from "1984" to "City of Ember."

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are wonderful and compassionate 8th graders who live and learn on the Southwest Side of Chicago. I teach their English Language Arts class and my focus is primarily on getting them to fall in love with literature in a meaningful way that lasts their entire lives.
Reading is a foundational and transformative skill that can be jumpstarted by a single book or story!
Your donation will help students make the connection between the stories we read and the real world through the art of the theater.
My Project
After reading Lois Lowry's "The Giver" as a full class, my students were clamoring for more Dystopian novels. I developed a book club and book report project to fit their needs, stimulate and encourage their interests, and meet their goals. Now I need your help to make it a reality.
All students deserve access to accessible, thought-provoking stories.
My students are curious world-questioners who need to have their thoughts provoked even further by the fantastic and predictive world of dystopian books. In this unit, students will choose a novel at their reading level, read the book in a group, and present the book to the class as a way for me to assess their learning, and as a way for them to recommend books to their peers.
My students have a wide range of reading levels, so I am asking for a wide range of texts. Some are ready for the challenge of tackling "Animal Farm," while others will be equally pushed by "The Ear, The Eye and The Arm." In every case, these texts are warning students - the future leaders of our world - about the failures that come from trying to create a utopia.
