In my district, we are proud of our education; graduating from this district, I can attest to the rigor of the curriculum, as well as the potential for success. When given the right tools, students have the ability to reach higher than they thought possible -- unfortunately, many students are hindered by their own beliefs in their abilities.
"Last year, I never thought I could do well in ILA; I guess I had a fixed mindset -- thanks for changing that!" For many students, through student-centered activities and promoting a love of literature, students have become self-confident in their abilities to master language arts.
These students that were taught to believe that it was something that they simply would never excel at, rose above their own crippling expectations.
Students in my district come from a vast range of backgrounds, each requiring their own needs. Through the use of materials acquired here, I hope to not only set my students up for a brighter future but to instill in them courage and self-confidence.
My Project
In the YA market, Dystopian texts have become some of the most intriguing texts. Students from all walks of life enjoy reading these texts, as they are immersed in a fictional world which often times mirrors our own.
As they begin to read about strong protagonists which make a difference in their fictional society, students learn to see themselves in those characters -- and their ability to make a difference in our world.
Katniss, Tris, Day, June, Thomas and now Risa, Lev, Connor, and Citra become household names in the classroom -- role models, even.
In a world in which young people are given a voice, Dystopian texts work to inspire our youth to question those around them. They begin to understand that they, just like their characters, have power.
My classroom needs Dystopian book club books not only to encourage students to read but also to encourage students to grow as citizens of our ever-changing society.
