My middle school classroom is overflowing with life and attitude. I love hearing my students talk about their favorite youtube videos or pop songs. I love seeing what cartoon creations they use to adorn the margins of their spiral notebooks. I love seeing the same student smile with the innocence of a child at the joy from their work and minutes later utter a gruff greeting with the aloofness of a teenager.
My students have a vibrant imagination and an authentic desire to learn.
Their thirst for knowledge about their worlds and themselves is thrilling. Whether it is a topic in a class reading or a project exploring a time period in history, they engage quickly, listen carefully, and ask thoughtful questions.
I serve a truly diverse community of middle school students across two grade levels in the same classroom. Our program works collaboratively to include students with special needs, English learners with multiple different primary languages, and students who are accelerated in learning in the classroom.
My Project
Students will get to know the thrilling, sometimes frightening and always thought-provoking, worlds of dystopian books in an upcoming unit for Reading Workshop in my middle school humanities classroom.
These titles promise to be some of the most engaging reads of the year for students and will also challenge them with longer books, new styles of writing and narrative, and complex themes about society.
Students will be assigned one of the books from this project for reading in class and at home. I will guide students through making meaning out of their books through mini-lessons on the dystopian novel genre, close-reading and annotation, vocabulary study, creative projects, and, of course, small group discussion in the form of book clubs.
