Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to learn when I ask the right questions and when I present them with the most appropriate material. However, packaged and pre-written curriculum doesn't always offer instructional tools that are appropriate for all learners. For my ERWC class--my on-level seniors--I have decided that Orwell isn't necessarily the right book for everyone. I remember reading 1984 when I was in high school and even though it's one of my favorite books now, looking back, I realize that I would have been much more engaged with the lessons the book was trying to teach if I had been offered a text that was more accessible. I simply was not ready for Orwell when I was 17 years old. The same is true for many of the students in my current ERWC class. Many of my students need nothing more than an author they can relate to or a story that reflects their unique experiences.
Many teachers in my district have implemented book clubs in recent years with great success, and I am looking forward to recreating the experience in my classroom.
The books I am requesting through this project are options for student book clubs that will serve as alternatives to Orwell's 1984. The novels I want students to have access to reveal themes similar to those in 1984 and they teach similar lessons. The difference is that the books I am requesting are written by authors of diverse background, the plots are more relatable, and thus, my students will be able to access the content a bit more readily than they would if I were to force everyone to read 1984.
