I am a first-grade teacher in a wonderful school in Wisconsin. My students are very special, and I just love going to school every day to see the sparkle in their little 5 to 8-year-old eyes. I truly have the most special job in the world and treasure every day with my students! Working well with parents, students, coworkers, and other specialists is an important part of my teaching day. Enjoying reading with my students is my absolute favorite part of being a teacher!
My Project
Did you know that Walt Disney was dyslexic? How about Steven Spielburg, Tom Cruise, Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Henry Winkler, Jay Leno, Beethoven, Da Vinci, and even George Washington? They all struggle or struggled with dyslexia, and they are amazing human beings! It boggles my mind to know that one in five students suffers in some form with dyslexia. This is a lot of students. Just think about what this means. Yet, very few teachers are certified or even trained in teaching students with dyslexia. So where are these students, who are very capable of succeeding, supposed to go for help?
Being able to offer support, after in-depth training in the area of dyslexia, can really make the difference for so many students who, truly, do not need to struggle!
I want to continue my professional development in this area, so that I am able to help students who need support for dyslexia so badly. This summer, I completed an intense, very thorough, and a simply amazing training in IMSE's Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham methodology. This was a wonderful opportunity, and I know that I will be able to support many students because of this training. I want to continue on by completing the Practicum for IMSE's Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham methodology. This is not required of me, and it is extremely intense; however, I believe that it will be completely worthwhile, as it will help me to develop even more in this very important, and strongly needed area of instruction. I can't wait to begin this process. Thank you to anyone and everyone who offers support, no matter how big or small. It is appreciated, and will truly make a difference in children's lives.
