This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is the foundation to education, and without be able to build a solid foundation my students are struggling more than ever. I am a dyslexia interventionist who services students with dyslexia. My students come to see me to receive dyslexia intervention services to help them with their reading fluency and comprehension.

My students, like their peers, enjoy reading, but they have to overcome many obstacles just to read simple books.

Many times dyslexic students are forced to read books on their reading level, but not on their social and intellectual level. Luckily the struggles my students face have not affected their love for reading.

With the intervention these students receive from me they will grow in their reading fluency, and thus their comprehension.

My Project

The supplies I am requesting will help my students in a variety of ways. I have requested items like binders, page protectors, pencils, and markers so that all students can focus on the work, not their lack of supplies or lack of quality in their supplies. Dyslexic students like mine need to use a variety of writing utensils. The variety in the writing helps the students with their handwriting as well as their muscle memory for each letter.

The books that I have asked for range from wordless picture books to books about students, like mine, with dyslexia.

Some requested titles include The Twits, The Flunking of Joshua T. Bates, The Alphabet War: A Story about Dyslexia, It's Called Dyslexis, and Tom's Special Talent - Dyslexia. The wordless picture books are for our group read alouds. Taking away the words helps my students not feel anxious about reading a book they cant read. Instead, the students can work on inferencing and predicting all while increasing their oral language. The books about students with dyslexia will help my students understand that many people are dyslexic just like them.
