My Students

Make reading a rich learning experience for young minds! Research shows that students learn best with interactive and authentic learning opportunities. Reader’s Workshops provide a dynamic and engaging environment for students to make significant progress in learning essential reading and thinking.

Since our district is transitioning to a research-based balanced literacy program, the fourth grade team is adopting a Reader’s Workshop model in place of a purchased publisher’s curricula.

A Reader’s Workshop model provides students with a choice for reading material, giving them options for books they are interested in and that are “just fit” to their reading abilities. Through this “Journeys” unit, students will not only engage with the text in meaningful and authentic ways, but they will also learn vital reading skills such as finding evidence, compare/contrast, determining importance, summarizing, and synthesizing information. These skills support students through high school and beyond, and are essential higher order thinking skills for any global citizen.

My Project

“Journeys” will explore the changes and challenges a character faces and will provide rich discussions about overcoming obstacles, an important life lesson. This project will purchase 45 paperback books which demonstrate a strong theme of “Journeys” including Stone Fox (Gardiner) and Night Journeys (Avi).

Make a meaningful impact on the minds of over 125 youth through this Reader's Workshop project.

Students have a unique opportunity to take ownership in their learning and extend it far beyond the reaches of the classroom. With deep budget cuts to the educational system, it is our responsibility as teachers, parents, and citizens to still provide students with the best education possible for their future successes.
