Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every day, my students arrive at school with hope for their futures. Our school is a Title /one school, which means we have a high percentage of students living in poverty. While poverty brings many hardships, it doesn't taint our attitudes and outlook at Stevens Park Elementary. Early each morning, you'll hear four hundred plus voices call out our "Bulldog Beliefs" with a rousing howl at the end! Stevens Park Elementary is the happiest school I've ever had the fortune to enter.
The majority of my students are living in poverty, making financial literacy lessons extremely important.
Most of them will be the first in their families to attend college and it is essential that they learn money basics before they need to pay for college.
Many of my students have limited or no access to books outside of school, making our literacy time so precious. While many of their parents work multiple jobs to provide for their families, my students frequently care for younger siblings. Despite all the challenges they face, my students are dedicated readers and learners.
My Project
Many of my students struggle with basic math facts, not to mention more difficult math operations. However, my students are reaching their weekly goals and consistently setting loftier and loftier targets. As their reading language arts teacher, I want to use money and math themed literature to help my students see the relationship between math and financial literacy.
A subscription to DynaMath, a real-world math magazine, will strengthen my students' connection between math facts and their application in financial literacy.
DynaMath incorporates high-interest current events with real-life word problems. With each issue, my students will unlock novel ways of using math in daily life.
I am incredibly fortunate to work in a school where can choose books and articles that complement my students' goals and interests. My students are ALWAYS interested in money and are fascinated with stories of successful people. Building a classroom library that re-enforces financial literacy is one way to help them to become smart money managers in their own lives.
