Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a truly diverse population in a truly integrated school where just over half are low-income and just under half are middle-income. Students who are Native American, African American, Latino, Asian American, and European American make up our population, as well as students who were born abroad or with parents who are immigrants from such diverse homelands as Japan, China, Laos, Nepal, India, Yemen, Palestine, Egypt, Turkey, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile.
Despite the differences between students and cultures, they come together under the values of courage, compassion, curiosity, integrity, respect, and responsibility to push for the self-success and community success with the motto "Leave no dragon behind!"
My Project
Give my students the gift of Capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian martial art. Students are eager to learn to sing songs in Portuguese, learn the dances, acrobatics, and maneuvers of Capoeira. With these tumbling mats, all my students will have a safe space to cushion their feet and train all the acrobatic moves that Capoeira has to offer them!
Capoeira is a culturally rich and vibrant martial art that is move of a good natured chess match than a violent martial art.
Capoeira involves teaching students to sing, play instruments, and dance-fight in a way where all have fun, are respected, and no one gets hurt.
With these floor mats (tumbling mats) students will be able to train acrobatic move sets that accompany the Capoeira art form.
