My students attend school in a very diverse area. We are a semi-rural county but are just minutes from a city. Seventy-five percent of our students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch, but our community also is home to several golf course neighborhoods. We are one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Brunswick County. We are a high priority school and our students struggle with standardized testing. The teachers are committed to trying many different strategies to help students learn. We believe that with hard work and creative strategies every student can be successful!
My Project
Using dictionaries and thesauruses is a skill many children do not have. In our technologically advanced society of Alexa, Siri, and Google, many have come to rely on these and other technological sources for basic skills.
Please help me teach my students that dictionaries and thesauruses may be old school, but they can certainly learn new things from them.
It is important for children to realize that they cannot rely on computers and smart phones for everything. Sometimes, they will have to "go off the grid", and knowing how to use a dictionary and thesaurus will aid in their reading, vocabulary, and writing skills.
We are learning word stems and their origins, and with a dictionary, students will be able to make connections between a plethora of words. Thesauruses are a great tool in increasing and advancing vocabulary, which in turn will benefit both their reading and writing. Vocabulary is integral to comprehension, and with the purchase of these resources, I believe my students will benefit greatly.
