My students travel anywhere from one block to 45 minutes to attend a charter school focusing on academics, arts and technology. They come to a school that encourages being well-rounded and becoming enriched in the arts and technology classes that we offer, as well as achieving high academics. We have a variety of cultures and socioeconomic levels and the students are excited to come each morning to a place where they feel they feel comfortable and belong.
My Project
My biology students are so excited but apprehensive to be able to complete a fetal pig dissection. I chose the fetal pig since the anatomy is very similar to that of our body organ systems and part of the NGSS and Utah SEEd Strand Bio 2.6 on the structure and function of interacting organ systems that make up multicellular organisms such as the pig. The excitement has been brewing all year and it is coming soon.
Hands-on labs are extremely important for students to be able to manipulate with the proper materials.
The school was able to buy me enough specimen for my classes this year, but we weren't able to get dissection mats, gloves and aprons to help to complete this in the best way possible. These mats will be able to be reused from year to year and will help to keep things contained with less mess. The pig dissection model will help the students to be able to compare to their specimen to, and assist in identifying the correct organs.
Another important part of this lab is the connection with those students who will be working from home, or for those who do not feel comfortable with an actual dissection. The paper version will help for all to experience this anatomy.
