I teach in a very diverse area in Queens at a Title 1 school. In my school district, students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I try to provide creative and meaningful learning experiences and opportunities for my students. I try to plan engaging lessons that will help them succeed and decrease the academic gap. I believe my students should have the same opportunities available to them as those who live in more affluent areas of NY. My students need to have up to date and interesting resources available to them. Not all students are able to afford basic supplies and some are definitely not able to pay for extra resources to enhance learning. I would like to provide my students with multiple opportunities to succeed, including technology and magazines that enhance learning. By triggering a love for learning and a curiosity about the world around them and how hey can improve it, I believe that together, we can help make a successful future generation.
My Project
I currently teach math for all the fifth graders in my school and I am looking for a way to engage my students, and bring the magic of math into the classroom. DynaMath magazines from Scholastic are a perfect resource for bringing math to life in the classroom. I LOVE math and want my students to love math just as much as I do and appreciate it, instead of fearing it. I believe the more students see how math is used in the world around them, that the more they will become engaged, interested, and excited about a topic that has a negative connotation. My goal is to use these magazines to provide engaging mathematical concepts to make students excited about math and further their development of math learning and meaning. Through the use of DynaMath magazines my students will develop an appreciation for math as students and adults. Math is everywhere and I want them to embrace it instead of fearing it. I currently use this magazine with one of my classes and would love to level the playing field and make it available to all fifth graders at my school.
