Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are freshmen and sophomores who dream of one day becoming health care professionals to serve those in need. When asked why they want to become a healthcare professional the most common response is, "I want to help others." Our Biomedical Science course is designed to give our students the opportunity to explore a variety of medical fields through the lens of case studies. These case studies are patients for whom they must keep a medical record as they navigate the possibilities of why they may be ill.
Our community is a border town where the majority of the community is of low socioeconomic status.
Many of our students are first-generation college-bound students. They dream of pursuing careers in the healthcare field to help others so we begin that now in our small community. My students become involved in community projects to bring healthcare awareness to our community throughout the year. They work hard and compete in HOSA Future Health Professionals and have represented the state of Arizona at the International Conference for the past 12 years.
My Project
Conducting lab work at the high school level always involves sharing and reusing materials as much as possible. However, COVID-19 has changed our lives in every way imaginable. The laminator will provide the ability to have lab procedures copies that can be sanitized in between use. Students will be able to take notes using expo markers directly on the lab procedures before transferring information to their journals. This will allow us to save on printing copies as well.
Lab procedures are only the beginning, vocabulary cards and charts among other manipulatives will become reusable and subitizable.
Not all students learn alike, providing vocabulary and definitions cards allow students to collaborate as they learn to match them. Dissection manuals never always end up splashed on or with bits of specimens on them, permanent damage can be prevented with lamination. The laminator will provide endless possibilities in the classroom to protect, preserve, and reuse.
