Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students I work with have varying degrees of communication challenges from autism to intellectual impairment to articulation disorders. They benefit from multimodal instruction that incorporates visuals and manipulatives when addressing individual objectives. Frequent change up of materials and manipulatives is essential in maintaining their interest and motivation in sessions. Most of our services are provided in a small group setting (2-4 students) but we do provide whole group lessons as well for preschool age classrooms and Life Skill programs.
My Project
My students benefit from strong, sturdy, hands-on materials that are laminated for durability. Using Velcro helps materials become more interactive, engaging, and stay organized! These supplies will help me to continue to develop highly individualized resources such as social stories promoting positive social skills, visual schedules with icon manipulatives, and behavior supports such as first/then boards in addition to weekly lessons. With the variety of lessons that are personalized for my students to promote their individual success, safe storage is a must. When materials are organized, it makes finding items that much easier and allows me to capitalize on every moment I have with the child.
