My students are children with Autism Spectrum Disorder who are having their first school experience through our preschool program. Some of them are nonverbal, and others have limited speech. They learn through play, center based activities, small group, and individual instruction. I use the resources we have to make these learning experiences as meaningful as possible for my students.
I am hopeful to give our youngest learners the best chance at success as they continue throughout their lives.
I am constantly collaborating with other teachers in our school to help them reach their full potential. Most of our students come with less so we must give them more. They come with less background knowledge, less experiences, a smaller vocabulary, and less exposure to educated adults than those students in affluent areas. They are coming with experiences some adults could never even imagine. Let's work together to give these students the best chance at being successful.
My Project
My preschool students love to play with legos just as their typical peers do, but they are unable to do so independently because of the danger of them putting small objects in their mouths. I want my students to be able to build with connecting blocks to build fine motor skills, and to do this they will need to have slightly larger duplo blocks that they can safely play with independently. I will also be applying duplo base plates to our walls in the fine motor center so that students can make a choice and communicate whether they want to build with their blocks on the floor, at the table, or on the wall!
This will be an extremely exciting new center for my students that will build independence, social skills, fine motor skills, and their confidence in play!
My students have shown a newfound interest in building with blocks and I would love for them to have access to a variety of types of building blocks that are also developmentally appropriate.
