The class is a dual language class, so the students desire to become fluent in both English and Spanish. I love their initiative, and their passion for language at this young age. The population is very mixed, with some students coming from middle-class households while others are from low-income housing projects. The students are from a multiple of countries and some have few skills in any language. However, in our classroom, the students work together and form an incredible melting-pot of linguistic exploration.
I am so impressed with how the students work collaboratively and how they truly care for one another.
The students not only share their accomplishments with each other, but then try to help their peers achieve their own goals.
My Project
Technology is key in all classrooms, especially the dual language classroom. Online activities are pivotal to enhance language development. Last year, my students truly benefitted when I brought in my own old tablet and created a center with apps like ABC Mouse and Duolingo (for Spanish enhancement). Unfortunately, my classroom lacks basic technology, such as smart boards and computers.
These iPads will allow the students to engage in English and Spanish online activities to supplement my reading and writing activities.
At risk and advanced students will be able to engage in online language activities in both English and Spanish. This will allow for differentiated instruction and cater to the learning styles of all the students.
