My students need high interest books in Spanish, like Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Wonder, and culturally relevant early reader titles like Lucha Libre, for the TK -1st grade students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Greenleaf TK-8 school in the Oakland Unified School District that serves 645 students, predominantly Latinx and African-American, with 73% of the student body speaking Spanish as their first language. Greenleaf is annihilating the stereotypes that have historically plagued the youth of East Oakland through advocacy, accessing power by exercising voice, self efficacy, and learning techniques necessary for making meaningful and lasting change. Our students deserve the best!

My Project
Greenleaf is a dual language school with 2 classes in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 1 class in 3rd grade are taught primarily in Spanish. As it currently stands, less than 1% of our library collection is Spanish language, so we do not have books to fulfill the students needs. Access to free-reading in a first language is a crucial component of literacy.

Right now, about 85% of the students at our school are testing multiple grades below grade level in literacy.
Getting them excited about reading - and keeping them excited - is essential to their success. The good news is that since our library officially reopened on October 20th, our students have checked out nearly 2000 books and their are 4 months to go! That is an astounding number when you consider our library has been closed for 4 years.
Our students have shown us that they are hungry for books - if we give them the books that they want, they WILL read them.
And if they keep reading, they will become life-long readers and scholars.
