My students are building a house for Habitat. We do around 80% of the total build. We do the framing, electrical, drywall, tiling, cabinets, windows, doors, trim, siding, stairs and isullation. We do not do roofing, concrete work and plumbing. The students are in their third year and have the opportunity to learn hands on in an off campus 2 hour block class. Currently we are hanging and mudding drywall. We are in need of more pans, knives, sanding blocks and sanding screens.
My Project
My students tend to crave a different type of learning. They get more out of school/ life if the can get their hands dirty and experience it. They also get to change the lives of a family who is in need of a safe, stable place to raise their children. The house we build is more than a grade, it is an experience and an adventure that can not be taught or duplicated inside a school building. When we are done, the students have gained skills that can lead to future employment. The work they do on our house improves their self confidence which in turn improves their school work.
